On July 28, 2022, Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott hosted his second annual Youth Summit to connect young people with local entrepreneurs and equip them with essential skills for their career and business journeys. “Getting to the Bag: The Pathways to Business, Entrepreneurship, and Career Development in Baltimore” featured interactive breakout sessions, panel discussions, professional development activities, and more.

Panelists included Deputy Mayor Ted Carter, Marc Broady, and Clarence “KD” McNair. “It was an honor to receive the invitation from the Mayor’s office to give encouraging words to our youth,” McNair said. “It was important for me to discuss how to overcome challenges in both business and life.”

McNair, a Baltimore native, began his career as a recording artist and producer in his early teenage years, securing a music contract with Motown Records with the help of his mother. He was a member of Prophet Jones, a hip-hop/R&B group from Washington, D.C., alongside Patrick “P” Rowe, Kevin “K.D.” Jackson, Tony “Hollywood” Dumas, and Jerome “Goldee” Lattisaw (brother of R&B singer Stacy Lattisaw). This opportunity allowed the group to collaborate with Grammy-winning producers, helping shape their unique sound. With advancements in online mixing, artists like McNair were able to refine and enhance their music, ensuring professional-quality production even from remote locations.

In November 2019, McNair released his first book, Give It One More Try, which highlights the importance of mental fitness. In the book, he shares his early traumatic experiences and the resilience that led him to success. “Most of our challenges start at home,” McNair said. “Maybe you want to change your family’s future, but there are so many challenges that create self-doubt. Remember to find value in what’s worth the struggle to stay motivated and achieve your goals.”

Throughout his talk at the Youth Summit, McNair emphasized the power of mentorship, expressing that had he realized its value earlier, he could have maximized his opportunities as a recording artist. Today, he is a successful brand architect and author, advocating for programs that prepare young people for the challenges of the real world. His work focuses on mental health awareness and positive solutions for minority communities, ensuring that the next generation is equipped with the tools to thrive in both business and life.
